This probably won't be popular, but I will explain my thinking anyway. lol

Cal
Sandin ELC
Boyd .7

Tor
Bennett 2.55 (40% retained)

Then

Det
Kerfoot 3.5

Tor
Merrill .925
Erne .997

Calgary is still using Bennett as a 4th liner. Sandin needs to play top 6, but in Toronto, he is likely not going to get the chance for at least 4 years if Rielly is re-signed(he is no Rielly, so he is not the succession plan or at least shouldn't be). Sandin could get an earlier opportunity in Calgary with Gio being 37. Boyd is a capable 4th liner to fill Bennett's spot. Calgary still saves about .8M on the cap.

Detroit picks up a solid 3C/W on a reasonable contract for a pending UFA d-man and a 4th liner.

For the Leafs. Bennett is going to be a bit of a project, but the skill is there. Gives the Leafs a chance to try him on LW with T/N or S or move Hyman down and try Bennett with M/M. He also can play C if needed. Merrill gives the Leafs D depth and he was a solid 3rd pair guy in Vegas. Erne adds size and youth to our 4th line. Kerfoot was going to be exposed or more likely traded before the draft for a return and cap space. I wouldn't expect much more than the kind of deal we got for Johnsson. A 3rd, maybe a 2nd type of value. Leafs get some cap space now (about .7) and more moving forward. They lose Boyd and Kerfoot off the roster, but pick up Bennett, Merrill and Erne for this playoff run. Bennett has arb rights, but is unlikely to see a real raise. He will probably be exposed at the draft and may be taken, but Dermott, Mikheyev, Engvall will also likely be available. Holl might be in there as well.

Hyman Matthews Marner
Bennett Tavares Simmonds
Mikheyev Engvall Nylander
Thornton Spezza Erne/Galchenyuk

If Bennett isn't working in the top 6, can try Galchenyuk or Erne on that left side or move Nylander back up. I personally think the Mikheyev Engvall Nylander would be a really good 2/3 line and we could use the Tavares line as the shut down line.

I really like your way of thinking. It will be difficult to greatly improve this team without moving Nylander. Bennett may be only a small improvement over Kerfoot, but he does play tougher. Depth at defense is never a bad thing and I like the idea of adding size and youth to our 4th line.

Well done RLF, very creative outside the box thinking.

It’s not a bad deal at all. Bennett will take a good prospect defenceman to get as Calgary doesn’t have an influx of those right now. Sandin suits this teams direction it has been taking in defencemen.

The kerfoot deal money wise offsets Bennett plus so dealing him and for depth at other positions and at a good cost is very wise. Bennett replaced the role kerfoot is in right now and Bennett better suits what leafs need more than what kerfoot does. Kerfoot isn’t better or worse than Bennett he is what leafs have much of. Bennett is that sandpaper type kerfoot is the more of the speed finess type. Both are good just Bennett is more needed for this team right now

Solid deals.

That Bennet deal is so bad it's not even funny.

Lol. Like I said, it may not be popular.
