I don’t think the Leafs do anything substantial like this but would be nice to get a competitor on D like Matheson with 3 years left at 4.85M. I think Monaghan is a guy we can look to resign at a decent AAV going forward.

A trade for Monahan would require the Canadiens give Leafs permission to negotiate an extension before finalizing a deal.
To trade for Monahan at the expense of two major assets without an extension would be a mistake.
Should Leafs trade for Monahan to be their 3rd line center I would prefer they kept Cowan and traded Minten.
Minten looks like a future 3rd line center in the NHL and with Monahan filling that slot Minten would become more expendable.

@WB49 I think you make a good point with Minten being more trades or with acquiring Monaghan. I think if Monaghan came with an extension it would cost more. A lot of the package we gave has to go for Matheson. Who is a solid top3 D on most teams and is a competitor. He still has 3 years left on his deal, which means he would cost us a pretty penny. Love his heart and think he would be a big asset on the backend for playoffs. Wouldn’t be so much pressure on Rielly to produce.

Probably have to give more for Monahan and Matheson although not a trade I would want the Leafs to make as is. I don't think Matheson is a big help for the Leafs. Defensively, he is ok at best. Not overly physical because he uses his speed and stick more. Monahan is the also not a strong defensive player although having a very good comeback year.

I am not really for trading really good prospects or the 1st this year if not getting what the team really needs with term and I don't think Matheson is that type of player. Monahan is a pending UFA. Seeler I like his aggression, but again he is a 3rd pair type of guy and a pending UFA. Leafs have enough of that and could just sign him in the off-season if they want him for next season.
