Barrie is horrendous defensively. Absolutely terrible. I just finished reading an article comparing Ceci and Barrie and Barrie is actually worse than Ceci. Much worse. So under normal circumstances, moving Barrie for a more defensively sound Brodie makes sense. But this is not normal circumstances. With Reilly and Ceci both out for basically the rest of the regular season, we absolutely can’t do without Barries PP capabilities. Muzzin and Holl are good enough defensively that Brodie doesn’t bring much more to the table that we don’t already have. If we trade Barrie for Brodie, our best offensive defenseman for the remainder of the year is Dermott. Gulp. Hate to say it, but at this point, we better keep Barrie. If he walks to free agency, so be it.

I posted this trade recently and stated that the Leafs could add a prospect or draft pick if CAL agrees to pick up some salary. I feel ok with Brodie or Sandin running the PP until Reilly comes back. I feel much better with a pairing of Dermott and Brodie the. Dermott and Barrie till Reilly comes back.

Can't Muzzin play the pp as the line D? He spent a lot of time on LA second unit for years. Less shorthanded goals coming at us too.

Muzzin might be able to. Right now though they are using Sandin on the 2PP. That kinda tells me tgat Keefe doesn’t have faith in Muzzin to quarterback the PP. I don’t think Sandin is a good choice to play 1PP, so it would have to be either Muzzin or Dermott, neither of whom is all that great for that position. If there is one thing Barrie is good at, and I mean really good at, it’s running the PP. It’s a huge part of the team’s success. He is even better than Reilly at it, and it wasn’t until Keefe took Reilly off the top unit and put Barrie on it that our PP really took a big step forward. I can’t see any of the other defensemen on the team being able to the job even half as good as Barrie. It’s by far the best part of his game and is what makes him an above average offensive defenseman (he’s not elite by any means) .
It’s not just the PP though. He’s the only guy on the blue line now that is capable of leading the rush effectively. He can make the stretch pass, and he’s got a booming point shot. His defensive gaffes are bad. Like Gardiner bad. He punches at the wrong time and too often, he fires his shot from the point far too often, creating offensive zone turnovers, he misses checks or gets caught out of position leaving his man exposed. But this was all known before we traded for him. He’s RHD Gardiner 2.0. But it’s his offense that we brought him in for. And his offense is what is sparking the guys up front to bang home a half dozen goals on any given night. With Reilly our, we really do need Barrie. I hate to say it, but unless we find someone to bring in that can replace what he can do in the o-zone and on the power play, then we best keep him. And finding a replacement at this point in the year will cost an arm and a leg. It would be a vast overpay for sure.
