It’s also difficult when you only save about a million in cap space because kopitar makes $10 million as well. I just don’t see enough reward for the risk for the leafs. Best case they are a little worse for the time being then when Byfield is ready kopitar is basically done and grossly overpaid so you again are likely a little bit worse.

I can see targeting the potential, but it’s hard to justify giving up matthews for so much uncertainty. What happens if Byfield amounts to nothing so all you get is a close to over the hill Kopitar? You would probably be asking for at least another first round pick or some kind of allotment of prospects or players to make the leafs consider the risk.

I feel like you have to look at it as being pretty close. Pesce is a 2RD and Kapanen is a 2RW. After the pesce injury his value wouldn’t be at an all time high. Engvall gets thrown in to balance a bit. Honestly though Pesce has been putting up terrible possession numbers the last couple years and even worse when compared relative to his team mates.

Islandjet, if I am willing to call you out when I think the post makes no sense, I better be willing to admit when I think you are right on as well. I think the leafs would likely need to add some kind of piece to the deal. Ekblad could be a great fit for the team, the difficult part would be trying to get the salary to fit. A pairing with him and Rielly would slit everyone on the leafs d into a favourable position moving forward. Maybe the leafs try and throw in a better piece in exchange for a little bit of salary retention? You never know.
