So depending how things go this season for us, and the league in general. We could be sitting on a player who teams with this new jumping in salaries will be the most sought after player after player in the league. If he produces as well as he usually does. William Nylander, if he waives his no trade, will spark a huge trading bid war.
If you think about it. What would he be worth as a UFA next year with the cap jumping again? He is tied up for 6 more years at $11.5.
It very well could be the best contract a team could trade for. Certainty for 6 years for a player who even if he slows down will most likely average 80-85 points for the duration. If we don’t keep him these last few weeks should give pause for thought. He is worth a lot more in trade value truthfully than Carlsson, 4 first round picks. Maybe Briere did us a favour.

I would have to think Werenski again if Columbus misses the playoffs and Nylander wanted out that’d be my first call. To answer your question, would be a franchise player or a second line player and 1st round picks.

And no, he didn’t do us a favour. Whoever we acquire will cost us at least 18 million per year.

I don’t wanna be Negative Nancy but I can stand Willy Nylander (aka Silly Peelander).
???
That’s a whole different debate.
* Let’s circle back to this topic when the season starts.

You don’t replace him with another star. You pillage their top prospects and future draft picks. Whether you hate or love or are ambivalent. His contract will be valuable in the trade market.

Yep! If we are entering a new NHL, controllable assets (draft picks and prospects) “might” be more valuable than ever ?♂️
But after saying that, you can spend all this money on training facilities, development and coaching and that prospect walks to the highest bidder ?
The NHL and NHLPA have a big problem on there hands.
As it stands now, what’s the point of Demidov signing a bridge deal? Just wait for RFA ?

Willy of all people I could see going to CBJ.
I'm not convinced he cares about winning like others do, so send him there if need be.

I’ve been onboard with trading Nylander since he held out to start the season for contract negotiations. Not for that reason, but I don’t think you win with guys like this and like you said, I think you can get some valuable pieces back in a trade while setting a new culture.

I’d trade him for a bag of pucks.

It is a huge problem. I think the league should increase and extend ELC to 3 million and year until you’re 25 or 5 years in the league, or get rid of offer sheets all together, because there’s no point in getting a first round, let’s say top 10 pick, if you have big money committed to other players.
If someone comes in and steals them away, or put a cap based on age, something like 18-25 8 million tops, 25-32 12 million tops and so on. Again, first round picks mean nothing if someone can offer sheet and steal them; totally devalues the process.

Clarky, I have no idea what holding out has to do with being able to win. It’s a team game; one guy holding out isn’t going to change any outcome. I’m not going to invest research time on this, but I’m sure a cup winner has had a holdout in their dressing room.

Definitely a Huge problem!!!!!
Only positive I can see is everyone sees it (GMs, players, owner and fans).
Let’s hope the NHL and NHLPA can work together and solve it.

I mentioned on a thread the other day that another issue that has ginhammered out is Nashville, Vegas, Florida, Tampa and Dallas. It has to a level playing field. For instance People have said if Philly had offered $16 to beat the requested $15 of Carlsson camp they would not be as upset.
But what if one of those other offer sheets talked about one was at close to $16 and it was from say Nashville. For Philly to match that for take home pay they need to offer $18.

I love ur thinking outside the box but in my option $10m is too much for a guy who’s only played 3x seasons.
Let’s pretend the offer sheet stuff never Happened. Is McJesus worth $18m?
I honestly don’t know, honest question.

I’m definitely second guess myself giving that kinda money to one player.
I don’t even know player dollar value anymore.
I don’t think anyone does.

Don't know if this is true or not, but shame on Verbeek if it is:
"Friedman about Carlsson Offer Sheet :... they went back to the Ducks before signing the offer sheet and asked for $15m and Verbeek said no".
Anyways, I agree with you guys that there should be some sort of cap coming out of your ELC.
The most a player can make is 20% of cap. Maybe a player's max contract coming out of their ELC should be capped at 10%/12%.
No way someone coming off their ELC should be the highest paid player in the league. That's just ridiculous.

McDavid was! And Matthews was far behind after his ELC.

McDavid is in a league of his own. He was leading the league in scoring in his 2nd and 3rd pro seasons. No comparison to Carlsson, who is only scoring at a .7 PPG.
Plus, this Carlsson OS is way above all other contracts. It's just ridiculous, IMO.
