At least we would have a defenseman signed past next year. I guess if he didn’t work out, we could expose him at the end of next year. There’s a very good chance that Seattle would take him. If not, I think we can buy him out? How does that work though? Buying out a contract that has been retained by another team? Does the other team have their half bought out too?

I don't even want Subban. He seems disinterested in hockey these days and is a huge distraction. He is also a has been these days. Not worth it.

Subban is a distraction wherever he goes, he was a good player in Montreal and maybe a year in Nashville, now all I see a big shot off the point, too slow for todays game.

So I looked into it. For anyone that cares to know, the answer is YES, you can buyout a contract which involves retained salary from a previous transaction. Both teams have to perform the buyout calculations and spread the salary out over the appropriate term.

So if Arizona were to buyout Kessel this summer, Leafs should have him on the books for $1.1M for the next two year, and then for only $50,000 the final two years. (Kessel also has signing bonuses, which makes his contract extra special when it comes to buying him out) .

I would try to add Kapanen and get Coleman. But like the idea of bringing in a veteran NHL defenseman. The contract is easy to handle sine both Sandin and Liligren are on ELC.
