Proposed Trade:
To Columbus: JVR, one of Percy, Loov, Valiev.
To TML: Werenski, Paul Bitner (if healthy) .
OR
Seth Jones one for one for JVR.
Jones new contract will likely be $6M plus so they save about $2M per season with JVR and get needed scoring. Trading Werenski might be less less appealing to CBJ because of salary issues but that deal would be my preference. We could take back a bad contract for 1 year only if it aids the deal.

Dumb trade by Montreal, they got fleeced. With Weber's age Montreal is in win now mode. They need scoring up front.
To MTL: JVR
To TML: Mikhail Sergatchev, Mike McCarron, 2017 2nd round pick
With Stamkos drama over now and knowing we're not in win now mode this trade makes sense for both parties. Leafs don't need to clear cap space this year to sign Stamkos and can let bad contracts run their course this year. Also helps keep us lower in the standings for next years draft. If we need more veteran presence to mentor our kids we can sign a mid level free agent to a shorter term deal. Don't enter into any more long term toxic contracts. Keep cap flexibility for 2018 and beyond. Also means one less player to protect in expansion draft.
Remember this trade follows the plan to build through the draft. Sergatchev will be a stud defenceman in 2-3 seasons.

What is Hunter doing? In round two, he picks two RW where we are already loaded. No D or G picks. Niemelainen still on the board. We need some big mobile D. He was projected as a 1st rounder. I guess we are going to trade for all our D.

Lots of wild trades being thrown around on this site, some make sense, most don't. Finally a Leafs management team that has a plan to develop one of the elite organizations in hockey.
I've had a recent change in my thoughts on the Leafs rebuild. Being impatient for a long overdue winner, I was onside for a Stamkos signing. Not anymore. It's 2 years too early and he doesn't look like the same player (not based on game 7). I wouldn't commit 7 years and $70M plus to that contract at the Leafs current stage. Stay the course of building through the draft, it's the only way to build a sustainable contender. Signing Stamkos would preclude us from taking on bad contracts this year for assets. Tavares free agency in 2 years is much better timing for our turnaround.
I love JVR and was opposed to trading him until now. He has only 2 years left on a cheap contract until he is a UFA. He'll leave or be getting a raise to $6M plus by the time we start to contend. If McCann can get Gundbranson what can JVR get us? I would target Zach Werenski, Trouba, Hanafin, Anahiem's D. Love Timo Meier in Mem Cup. Maybe Philly would move Proporov to bring back JVR, they're deep in D prospects and need scoring forwards. Point is JVR should be shopped for best value/ prospect/ picks, ideally an NHL ready prospect on entry level deal. There should be a strong market for JVR and the time is right to capitalize. We can sign a mid level FA vet for 1-2 years to help mentor the kids.
No urgency to upgrade in goal. Let Bernier finish out his contract and see what he has. There will be many opportunities next year if expansion is coming, as expected. If an opportunity lands in our lap, go for it but don't spend our prospect capital now and overpay. Draft a couple of goalie prospects to get some talent in the pipe.
We need a great draft this year and next and then we can supplement with free agents selectively. I would try to get another mid first round pick or two by taking bad contracts and adding non core players/ prospects/ picks, eg Datsyuk contract. Should be lots of opportunities out there to help cap strapped teams and get compensated for it.
Goal is to keep filling the prospect pipeline and keep cap flexibility. Our time starts 2 years from now.

We have other contracts to unload before JVR. Bozak, Laich, Milachek, Greening, and so on.
Some of the AHLers are not up to snuff and are getting older. So they can be traded first as well.
As for JVR; I think this year or next at the trade deadline is the best time to trade him when you can leverage better returns from salivating general managers.
Still would love to see Stamkos in Toronto, but the clot to me, makes it a no go; even if they say it won't affect him. He will probably resign with Tampa (8 years and lower taxes, and of course sunshine)
So Mr. Taveras, it's getting close to time to come home.

The only reason I don't like trading JVR at the dead line is that limits who you can trade with. The only teams that would want him at the trade dead line are the top teams in the league which means a late 1st rd pick ( most likely in the 20's). If they could trade him at the draft to a team that thinks they are just a top six player away from the cup (ie, Calgary, Montreal) that 1st round pick would be a top 10.

Why all the love for Trading JVR for Fowler? JVR should get more. Fowler is a nice player but if trading JVR we should get a higher upside adman. If JVR goes to Anaheim we should hold out for Lindholm or Theodore plus another asset.

Leafs would totally do this deal but they would have to add, probably a lot. Werenski would be a good addition but I would trade JVR not Kadri. Perhaps JVR, Kapanen, Percy or Loov, pick 30, one other prospect and/or mid round pick might get Jackets to consider.
