I thought I'd share my 2 cents worth of the developments with the Leafs. Obviously most of the recommendations weren't listening to what the top 2 dogs on the team were looking to improve for next year. I think they wanted skill and more toughness. The ideas that I have read on these write ups are way far away from the reality of these expectations. Firstly the Leafs are trying to get back into a win now mode. For the draft I would go with Stenberg he seems to have more of what the team is looking for to make the next move (his exposure to the game has experts trending into that direction and remember the team should go for the best player available to meet the current needs). Going for a D man would make NO sense logical sense since a newly drafted D-man would not be in a win now ready (Schaefer got taken last year).
Matthews didn't get the help he needed this year. He needs a veteran on the wing who offers both toughness, scoring and some skill. I think a guy like Anthony Mantha might fit the bill. Now if the Leafs could acquire Pettersson then hey we have Swedish second line and a solid first line. Now for the 3rd line Traveres, Cowan and another version of Mantha could make up the 3rd line. The fourth line can be made up with what's available. The D is a bit tricky, the team needs to acquire capable players that are not injury prone that hurt the team a lot last year and this only require 2 acquisitions. I think Leafs management should seriously consider bringing Laughton back. He demonstrated that he had strong positive influence with the younger players and that is a definite +++ for the team and he wants to be a Leafs.

I follow you but then you drop off with the defence and don’t recommend any names or how they will be acquired…..
So basically it’s not really 2 cents because it makes no sense….

I agree Golftown. We all know the needs. Give us an idea how you would trade for them? We can’t depend on UFAs this year because the class is slim and the bidders will be many and many as well that are closer than we are to offer being on a Contender for the cup.

Suffering,
I agree with your statement on this year’s UFA complement but I believe it will still be very important to any success in next year.
Unless the Leafs, under Chayka, go for a rebuild and trade Matthews, Nylander and Knies they really have nothing to trade that will get us back as contenders.
And I don’t think that is Chayka’s plan or what he was hired to do.
Picking 1st obviously helps for next, McKenna can step in immediately and perform better offensively than most in the bottom6, though they won’t relegate him there.
So I think the Leafs try to sign select UFAs and perhaps get a current NHL player like Simon Nemec for Maccelli and Robertson and maybe Owen Tippett for Joseph Woll.
I understand getting Tuch is very expensive and caution needs to be taken with Darren Raddysh but those two make us instant contenders; at the right price.
Other UFAs I’d be interested in include Logan Stanley, AJ Greer, Jack Roslovic and Anthony Mantha.
Secondary UFA choices and a bit of bargain basement shopping include Riley Tufte, Raphael Lavoie, Ilya Mikheyev and Brett Kulak.
I understand we cannot sign all of them but I do see it as part of the solution, emphasizing the word part!

I agree with you, RandySears, there is a lot of logic in you analysis.

Maccelli and Robertson for Nemec??
Don’t drink and post
Then you top it off with Tippett for Woll??
??????

Easy to make frivolous comments, Golftown, when you offer zero reasons.
But I expect that type of response from you.

With all the anxiety and difficulty sorting out the coaching role in Toronto, why not have Matt Sundin be the coach (temporarily (very short term)) until things get sorted out. He might surprise everyone.
1.) 30 May 2026 09:45:15
Well probably because the Leafs management doesn’t have any anxiety lol there’s still a lot of time to find a coach.
2.) 30 May 2026 12:01:53
I don’t follow the logic on this one. We have ample time to put a coach in place. If we put Sundin as “temporary” coach to start the season and then replace him. How does the coach miraculously appear?
Also I think the current Management is still on the fence on what direction they want to go retool, rebuild or a combination.
Once they commit to the direction then they will know what coach they want to target. Because not all coaches at this level are adept at each of those scenarios.

Now that Domi has been added, the Leafs should seriously consider adding Debrusk (if something can be worked out).

I think the Leafs should try to get more out of the third and fourth lines. One way of doing this is to switch up the lines, make 3rd to 1st and 4th to second for at least 1 full period in each game going forward. If i recall there were complaint of not getting enough contribution from secondary scoring when the big boys werent scoring in the playoffs in the past. With extra time given to these player we could get surprised.
And with the goal of the opposing team to shut down the big boys this could be something that could be a strategy to activated in the playoffs.

If I get this straight, the suggestion is at least for one period a game, rest the top 2 lines and play the 3rd and 4th more.
What if it has been a tight game and gets to the 3rd and Leafs are down by one goal and they haven't done this suggestion in the 1st or 2nd period yet. Do they rest the top 2 lines in the 3rd when down by a goal? I'm not sure this works.
I think they just need to balance the ice time better like they have lately. Stop trying to outscore the other team and play a game style that prevents chances and gives the other team no time and space on the ice. Lots of puck pressure. Then when Leafs get the puck, go on offence without selling out on the defensive side of the game.

I think any movement of players MUST include Stolarz in any package. The LEAFS aren't a bad team but when you look at the number of losses they have had much of which were when Stolarz was in goal. Mark you I understand injury was involved but think about it if he had performed 50% better the story would be different today. I Hope the management team isn't smoking some bad weed when making these important trade decisions and don't confuse Ganja for the Maple leaf.

If the numbers work on all of these then I would say go for it.

David I like your response well thought out reasoning. But remember this is Maple Leafs Sports and ENTERTAINMENT. There needs to be some drama to keep the offseason alive. Cheers.

I don't Mariner wants to leave the LEAFS this year he might settle for a $11mil/ maybe $10Mil short term deal (1 or 2 yrs) . I think he realizes he is this close to the cup and the LEAFS only need a few impactful supporting pieces (where the discount would help) . This discount would go a long way plus with a new young family who would really want such a major change. I think achieving his dream for the cup in Toronto has more value (tangible and sentimental) than the $$$ at this stage of the game, plus having the cup + point on the resume goes a long way
. For the Rust deal the LEAFS could do Kampf, Jamkrok and a pick +? .

I know since the LEAFS loss everyone is in a major shake up mode. But have you guys look at the Trend with Professional Sports. Over the years I have noticed that Canadian Teams with American Players don't get very far when it really matters when competing and American counterpart. I am not trying to be anti American here. but whenever the games really matter the American players somehow disappear from (Canadian Teams) the game. I look back at the Blues Jays when they won the first time. Most of the players were Latinos. With the exception of Kawhi on the Raptors all previous teams were mostly Americans on a Canadian team and they too disappeared after hearing the American Anthem. Back to the NHL, a team that is currently dominant by Canadian and non Americans these are player play their hearts out. On the Leafs, the Canadian players are trying their best (take Willie and Tavares (I guess I could throw Mariner in as well) as examples. On the American Teams with Canadian players they too are playing Their hearts out and winning regardless of the anthem. Now for the LEAFS every year we go through the same cycle and the obvious (which doesn't make sense decision) is to shuffle the deck and replace good players with you know what and the cycle continues. Changing management and replacing (American player) who don't want to play in Canada is not the solution. Lets look at Tkackuk after heading south THE SCRIPT CHANGED and so many other "Good America players refuse to play for teams north of the border. I think when RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL this year the Canadian Teams should vet players who really want to play for Canadian team (I don't know if that's possible) or else next spring we will see the cycle repeat itself.

T-Bum I understand your frustration. It seems that the LEAFS management is intentionally working towards a NON PLAYOFF year. Every other team seems to be making an effort to improve except the LEAFS. And for the time being they should stop targeting 50% players hoping to get lucky to add to the already 50% players on the team. With the limited scoring that is showing expect great frustration from the fans, we may even see a revolt LOL. But remember T-Bum its only a game.
