So, someone needs to comment on the fact that hockey trades often do not reflect "who is the better player" anymore. So many trades now involve taking existing cap hits, future cap trouble, waiver eligibility, UFA status etc, that the "old way" of evaluating trades is now gone.

Marner for Jones is not at all questionable. While I agree under normal circumstances as a hockey man, I keep the solid dman but Columbus has lost most of its offence and in particular star players to draw fans. I think Columbus would make this trade straight up in a heartbeat. Just better for their franchise.

Love Seguin, but Leafs don't trade for a centre they don't need. It is important to recognise how you limit a player's effectiveness by casting him in the wrong role. Think Phaneuf as a number one defenceman which totally made him ineffective in everyone's eyes. Think Kadri being a third line centre last year with resulting poor production. Leafs as a team can use upgrades in RHD and backup goaltender. If Marner problems continue, maybe RW too.

Tavares doesn't need a playmaker. Its a nice to have but not need to have. Tavares plays his game no matter who his linemates are and makes them all better players. Tired of folks over-rating Marner. He is a good, shifty playmaker who plays his heart out. But he is not in Tavares or Mathews class.

Any trade of Hyman is a non-starter while Babcock is the coach. Also, no way Ottawa trading Chabot. Thirdly, Chabot would be great, but Leafs don't really need a left shot defenceman anymore.

@LeafsLife Did you actually read my post where I said in the very first line that Bracco (among others) isn't ready to be on the big club this year. Bracco, to be effective anywhere must play in a top six role because he needs to play with elite finishers. It is simple player utilisation. He can't be successful on a shut down line (third line) nor can he be effective on an energy/ forecheck line (fourth line) . Bracco will play in the NHL some day, but top six like I said.

I don't think that Petan, Bracco or Timashov are Leafs this year. Bracco will be a terrible fourth liner (he has to be in a top 6). He is a viable replacement for Marner though. Leafs have better options for the fourth line in Spezza, Moore, Agostino, Shore. Pontus Aberg will be third line left wing. He is the sleeper in the UFA signings.

I agree with Redwing that Parayko is a top 10 defenceman if measured by actual defence rather than points production. Like Babcock says "he is 6'6" everyday". He is currently the closest thing to Chara when he was in his prime that there is. That being said, puck moving d are way more valuable in the NHL these days, so he probably does not make a top 20 list. However, if your team has three puck movers already, Parayko is a MOST valuable commodity. The Leafs would absolutely love this guy considering they have Rielly, Barrie and Dermot.
