Just out of curiosity, would anyone trade Matthews for Tage Thompson straight up? Or would someone have to add? I personally would take Tage.

A couple caveats.

I would make rubbish trade if;

Mathews wouldn't resign.

Mathews wants 13.5/ 3 years

Mathews says he doesn't want to be here.

As we currently stand, probably not, but it's an interesting discussion.

All things being equal, I like Tage's contract better, but Mathews is still a top 3 player in the world.

Matthews is a guy I would say you don't trade. But Thompson and Dahlin? That would be tempting. I can't imagine Matthews waiting to go to Buffalo and then re-signing which is the only way this happens.

Thompson and Power would get Matthews in a heartbeat if I was Leaf GM.

As good as they are I am not a fan of either Matthews nor Marner and a trade that brought back both a #1 center and a future top pairing defender for Matthews would make me smile!
I find it difficult to be a fan of a player who is more interested in being the highest paid player in the league than he is in his own team.
A player who has (reportedly) stated that he wishes to be the first NHL player to accrue $200 millions in earnings would not be the leader of my team!

Matthews has said he would take less than market value if it helps the team. He’s not selfish. Not sure what tabloid you saw that alleges he said wanting to the the first to 200 million.

Mike Johnson (TSN) said matthews “could” earn 200 million if he wanted to. No one has claimed that Matthews said that. Kypreos claiming they have settled around 13.5 which will be a fair deal over the life of the contract if it’s 4 years or more. He sets the market for McKinnon and McDavid to make over 14 or even 15 for McDavid.
Matthews electing 3-5 years instead of 8 is a wise move for him, and he’s betting on himself and the cap rising significantly during that time.
People jumping on Matthews and calling him soft, greedy etc is ridiculous. Didn’t hear anyone bashing Samsonov for asking for essentially 5 million after one good season.
