If Marner holds out for more money or decides to play out his contract with the Leafs to become a free agent, it will be almost impossible for him to perform for the team next season.
He will be eviscerated by both the fans and the media.
The way the fan base would turn on him would be unprecedented.
He and his wife would be afraid to step outside of their home.

Offer Marner the same contract William Nylander was given $11.5M over his choice of term.
If he refuses the offer then Leafs can take that as an indication that being a Leaf For Life is not among Marner’s priorities.
At that point they could approach him about a trade to a team of his choosing and allow that team the opportunity to negotiate an extension before agreeing to the trade.
