Is it time to begin the rebuild?

To LA Kings: Austin Matthews ($13.25)

To Leafs: Quinton Byfield ($6.25), Brandt Clarke (863,333)

LA Kings would have to add some salary to even out the cap.
Maybe Trevor Moore ($4.25 x 3) or Warren Foegele ($3.5 x 3)

The way I am looking at it: Matthews is more than likely to walk away in free agency in 3 summers anyways.
A return to the U.S. seems inevitable.
Especially if the team continues to play at this level.
Why wait.
This team is not a contender.
Leafs could start building for the future now.

I don’t mind that trade at all; in fact was one that I pondered.

After looking at two Rantanen trades esp. Hurricanes trade to Dallas, the Eichel trade and the Thachuk trades I think we can get 2 solid players and 2 picks including av1st.

Another one might center around either Schmaltz & McBain OR Hayton and Crouse plus 1st and 2nd 2026.

Or to the Rangers for Lafrenière and Schneider plus 1st & 2nd in 2026.

Agreed WB I don’t see a reason to prolong the inevitable here. I suggested not long ago but got laughed at.

@Rsears if we use those as comparable and assume Mathews is a much better player as well ad a centre, can we not expect a better return?

I like the trade, but I would say if you made AM34 available, you could get more.

Eichel is a C as well; understand they have more value than a winger.
For a Cup contender and at TDL another solid player might be squeezed so perhaps you’re right.

@Rsears Eichel is such a weird comparison I didn't really take him into account. His surgery that Buffalo refused really changed that dynamic.

I guess you're right though, he could be used ad a comparable.
