Leafs only have two (2) players and two (2) prospects that other teams might really be interested in.
Matthews & Nylander, Cowan & Danford.
Leafs are already the 4th oldest team in the league with no picks until 2028 and only Cowan & Danford as true NHL prospects.
Trading either or both prospects is a recipe for disaster as Treliving's two deadline deals were (2026 - 1st, Minten, 2027 - 1st Grebenkin).
I would prefer to keep our two prospects and Willie is my favorite/only Leaf I really like.
That Leaves Matthews.
As GM, I would sit down with Matthews and his agent, point out that the team is going nowhere but backwards and ask them if they would consider providing a list of 3 or 4 teams they might consider a trade too.
Then go to work to see if any of those teams have a package to offer that would justify trading Leafs #1 center.
Something like:

To LA Kings: Matthews

To Leafs: Quinton Byfield, Brandt Clarke, Liam Greentree and a 2026 - 2nd round pick.

Knies - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Byfield - Greentree
Joshua - Roy - ? (McMann)
Lorentz's - Laughton - Jarnkrok

McCabe - Tanev
OEL - Clarke
Benoit - Carlo
Reilly

Why’s trading a 2nd line winger and a #4 D who are a few years off, a recipe for disaster? Either they have to go for it now . / or a total tear down to rebuild around the 2nd line winger and #4 D that will lead leafs to Stanley cup glory .

I would call trading your #1 center the beginning of a tear down.
The hope is that Byfield will develop into the #1 center by the time Tavares’s contract expires.
Liam Greentree ís a right winger a commodity Leaf’s only have two of at the moment and one of them is Jarnkrok.
Brandt Clarke ís a right hand defenseman and ís already better than either Carlo or Reilly.

You don’t have to like this particular deal.
Suggest another?
What i am saying is that Leaf’s should trade Matthew’s before considering trading any more of their future in terms of picks or prospects.
No one trade for a guy like Schenn (34) or Kadri (35) is going to change Leafs current misfortunes.

@WB49 I just never heard a real hockey mind say Nylander is their favourite. I can’t stand watching this guy play most of the time. Gives up on his team, terrible on the defensive side of the puck. Terrible role model for the younger guys. Lacks heart! Knies, NcMann and JT are the heart of the forward group right now.
