Ok so I’ve gone a tad over board on the Rielly trades but it seems so many people want him gone so let’s point out something here.
Reilly cap hit is 7.5 we all know but did you know the first 3 years of this deal Rielly actually received 28 million and this year has received 4 million this far. Rielly is owed 4 million this year then 4 years at 6 million .
What I’m getting at is a team not cap strapped who care less if actual cap hit and focus on saving money can view Rielly starting next year as a 6 million dollar dman which we should all agree that’s probably his real value .
So now you need to find a team who value money more than cap
Aniheim is that team.
Aniheim offence from back end is very blah. Lacombe leads the team with 24 points then the next best is 17,15,11,9,8 and 6 points. Rielly would lead this team in points and instantly boost their offence
Aniheim has a forward I think that would keep Matthews happy. His real life best friend since 14 years of age Troy Terry.
He had one goal scoring year that got him this deal but since 2021-22 he only has 61 54 and 55 points. He can’t seem to get back to that 37 goal season as he only has 64 in 3 seasons since. he has 40 points in 43 games but only 13 goals this season. I’d say he’d be a compliment passing linemate for Matthews and at 7 million per year and being owed 28 million overall Rielly being owed 24 million in same timeframe this deal is pretty close in value for a team wanting to save 500k in cap space for a team saves 4 million in real money over 4 years and only adding 500k cap space
Win win I think?

I don't actually agree here at all.
This isn't one of those frontloaded deals where his real dollar are 10% of cap. It's a small difference comparatively.
I'd also expect the Ducks to try and win a cup here very soon and pend the money to do so.

But Reilly deal is front loaded and while 4 million seems like a small comparative so is the 500k cap differance between the 2 players.
Whether it’s with Terry or Reilly either way Aniheim is stuck with a 7 million cap hit when they are going to start to spend . That cap hit is there regardless so why not save 4 million in the process. Easy savings for them.

Chicago trades
Murphy and tor 2nd rounder for Rielly (1.5 retain) then Chicago can decide what to do with Rielly.
They have 1 retain slot available so could easily retain any amount to go along with the 1.5 Toronto picked up and grab more picks and prospects. Or they keep him and hood once bedard is healthy he helps the back end offensively.
How’s that.
1.) 06 Jan 2026 22:41:04
Shouldn’t that be the other way around, with Murphy to the Leafs while Rielly and a 2nd round pick go to Chicago.
Murphy is a far superior defenseman to Rielly!

It’s 1 for 1 and the 2nd is for a long term retain 4 years of retaining. again the jones 2.5 retain for 4 years wasn’t a reflection of jones value it’s the value of the retain and 2.5 (10 million) gets you a 1st 1.5 (6 million) probably a second. Jones then at 7 million was traded for a high end very young goalie and his potential
So look at this trade as Rielly at 6 million for Murphy and the second is for retaining.

3 way trade
To Nashville
Rielly with 3.75 retained
To chicago
Matthew Wood
Noah Chadwick
Pittsburgh 4th
Take on 1.25 retained
To Toronto
Conner Murphy
Reid Shaefer
Minnisota 2nd
Take on 2.5 retain.

Rielly 2.5 retained to LA for Brandt Clark Columbus 2nd rounder and Dallas 3rd rounder
If Seth jones and retaining him for even longer term wise at 2.5 million fetched Chicago a top tier goalie prospect and a 1st rounder surely Rielly retained can do same and imagine Dwight and Rielly together. Something to think about.

Imagine doughty lol.
2.) 06 Jan 2026 00:08:12
Morgan Rielly has been on the ice for more goals against per minute than any other player in the league, with 400+ minutes at 5 on 5.
Need I say more?
Rielly has zero value let alone netting Brandt Clarke a 2nd and a 3rd.
3.) 06 Jan 2026 05:53:45
True enough. This was more comparing Seth jones trade value after 2.5 million got retained by Chicago as they were able to land a 1st plus a future star goalie in the deal.
jones is the only comparable I found that retained for multiple years (5 years) at this amount
Is Reilly of same value as jones probably not but that’s why jones is a 9.5 player vs Rielly 7.5. But you can’t argue that the retain is the same value in a trade and Rielly for only 5 million is comparable to jones at 7 million over 4-5 years.
Maybe I reached to much on Brandt Clark so instead of him grab vojtech sihar or Liam Greentree instead
Again this was just to actually have a comparable to the 2.5 retain Reilly and leafs would do to what Chicago got for jones.

Van-keifer Sherwood, Tyler Myers
Calg-Rasmussen andersson, Mackenzie weegar,
Blake Coleman
Nyi-Jean Gabriel Pageau, Scott mayfield
Colu- Boone Jenner, Damon severson
Sherwood is a hit machine and Myers is a block machine.
Andersson is a dream all around everything machine while weegar is much the same but to a less extent and Coleman is a pk all around kind of guy
Pageau wins faceoffs and is right handed which leafs need at center and mayfield has declined but still a hit machine tough guy
Jenner is a dream all around tough competitor while severson again is a dream all around dman
Could the leafs get some of these targets what are your thoughts.
1.) 05 Jan 2026 22:17:19
No they can’t. Lol.
2.) 06 Jan 2026 00:11:15
Vancouver is holding out for a 1st round pick for Sherwood
Calgary would want a 1st round pick for Weegar and another 1st for Andersson.
The rest aren’t worth sacrificing what little youth Leafs have left in the cupboard.

Solid answer water buffalo. I like when others put thought into their answers making debating trades fun.
