Finally a reporter calling it like it is.
The Toronto Maple Leafs Summer Just Went From Bad to Worse
The Toronto Maple Leafs have not had a great summer no matter how hard the media spins it
By James Tanner | Jul 10, 2024
The organization is a complete joke. People need to start to influence Pelley to make some changes and fix this thing before they set us back another generation of hockey.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
1.) 11 Jul 2024 14:58:56
That makes two firsts on this site.
1. James Tanner being called an actual reporter.
2. Using a Tanner written article to try and solidify ones argument.
Jdub. You make some good points about the franchise being a failure for many years. But using Tanner as an ally?
I rarely look at anything Tanner writes as it is all just click bait where he takes an outrageous stance to get views.
What I do know about what he has wrote. Tanner loves Dubas and what Dubas was trying to do. He loves the core 4. He wrote trading Nylander would be a massive mistake. He doesn't like Treliving because Treliving doesn't think like Dubas. Tanner loves all the small skilled players.
Aligning with Tanner hurts an argument, it doesn't help it.
2.) 11 Jul 2024 15:16:00
Lol. You referenced Tanner.
3.) 11 Jul 2024 15:36:53
Yes I generally do not agree with Tanner's POV however he is bang on in this piece. Read it. If you disagree with it then I encourage you to point out what it is you find wrong with it, not the fact that I've used it to provide encouragement to the media to call things as they are. Even though I know they can't/ won't because the media company they work for own's the very team they should be criticizing for it's repeated failures. It's like having the cigarette companies owning the media and telling everyone that smoking is good for your health.
The only way things change is by making them uncomfortable. Hit them in the pocket books. Make it so annoying every time they are in front of the camera or a reporter they want to jump off a cliff. Hold Pelley and the Board of Governors accountable to winning when it matters. I'm not holding my breath this will happen but it's 100% what is needed. Oh and BTW, it really doesn't matter if you agree with me or not, time will prove it out. There's nobody who wishes I'm wrong more than me, I would give my left nut for a Leafs Cup win. Unfortunately I know I am right and will be keeping both of my testes.
4.) 11 Jul 2024 16:12:22
LOL. Any one of your posts Leafslife.
What's going to be your excuse next year? Or the year after? Or after that? Maybe take Treliving's love of big D out of your face and come to grips with reality. They don't have the brain trust to put together a winner, and they don't need to with guys like you always coming back for more teet.
5.) 11 Jul 2024 18:33:09
@JDUB I don't think they're winning this year either. I was adamant about moving on from Mitch when he tried to hold out. Same with Willy. I didn't want Willy signed this time either, and I would like Mitch traded.
Not sure where you're getting this from with me.
6.) 11 Jul 2024 19:10:53
What they need is for Brendan and Brad to be put out on their arse before they can do any further damage. Marner needs to go because he's a perimeter player that can't play the style needed in the playoffs and he makes significantly too much money for what he brings in the postseason. This money needs to be allocated elsewhere with players that can perform. I'd sooner have two 6 million dollar players who can over Marner. JT needs to be given the option to stay a significantly reduced AAV, he's still effective and I've had no issue with his performance from a play perspective. His passion and emotion is where he falls terribly short for me. If I hear one more PC interview where he tries to say the "right" thing or the BS that we're close I'm going to puke. Fawk right off buddy! Yell, be upset, show there's a human that cares inside you. Give me something real. I also have no issues with Willy. He delivers in the playoffs and has been the only to tell Marner to shut the F up with all his high school antics. Grow up Mitch!
The reality is that Brendan and Brad intend to run it back. They could be looking at letting Marner walk for nothing, which is terrible asset management, but still better than them extending that child to another NTC 8 year financial disaster. Pelley needs to ditch them quickly before that happens. Seems like other MLSE executives are leaving so maybe we get lucky. Leaf fans best hope is that the Leafs come out of the gate flat and lose a ton of games to start the year and this forces Pelley to act. Losing is the best and only hope to have a chance of saving this franchise in the foreseeable future. Being mediocre will only extend the drought another 10 years. The cupboards are empty and Matthews will finally have had enough of it. Unless of course he actually enjoys having his summers off. I don't think so but I still need to see proof.
7.) 11 Jul 2024 20:01:10
@JDUB it sounds like we're mostly on the same page oddly enough lol.
One caveat, if Mitch says no, they cannot force him. You don't want him gone for free, don't want him extended, and he has a full nmc. What can be done?
8.) 12 Jul 2024 13:54:07
See I believe they CAN force him. They control his playing time and circumstance. They control if the fans and media know he declined a trade. They also have the influence of his teammates. If I was AM34 or Willy I'd be pissed at him for screwing the team over with not getting assets for him because he's being a baby. There is NO situation where he can say I want to stay a Leaf and it happens just cuz he wants it. Ultimately he WILL be leaving if they don't want him. The only ultimate outcome is if he screws the team or he doesn't. If his choice is screw the team then getting rid of him is obviously the best choice because he doesn't actually care about the Leafs. From what I've seen in his actions/ interviews he's a child that is still trying to gain affection. He's immature and speaks like a dummy. It's truly amazing given the leaders that have been brought in to help him. Marleau, Thornton, Spezza, Boyle, Tavares, Muzzin, Foligno, O'Reilly.
9.) 12 Jul 2024 20:14:25
@JDUB the only thing I disagree with is, you can force him to leave. I don't see it. I don't think his teammates are involved in things like contract talks at all, and Mitch just wants to max out the payday.
09 Jul 2024 15:17:21
Here's a question for everyone.
Given that the Leafs brass promised that everything will be on the table this offseason and they have failed again to deliver, a common theme with the Leafs, will any reporter step up and ask them WHY? when training camps open up this fall?
WHY? should be the only question that is asked, over an over and over again. Bring about a storm of frustration and accountability to light and don't let them off the hook. Make Pelley's job uncomfortable. Make ownership question HIS hiring. WHY? over and over again.
Oh BTW, the answer is that non of the media folks will ask because, hey guess what? The Leafs own and control the media. Seems like a pretty sketchy and lovely set up they have.
They are, as I've mentioned before, the biggest joke in the NHL As a lifelong devoted Leaf fan I'm so disgusted with them that I won't even let my 4 year old watch them on TV. I don't even want him to know that I cheered for them. I'm so close to telling him I'm a Habs fan because I don't want him to be subjected to the disgrace that is the Toronto Maple Laughs.
And let's face it. the Habs will most likely win the cup again before the Leafs do.
1.) 09 Jul 2024 17:35:34
I'm not sure what they could have done. Mitch refused to leave.
2.) 09 Jul 2024 18:15:59
A) You don't know that.
B) If that's the case then you come out and say it.
The Leafs need to be in the business of winning, not babysitting these entitled whiners.
There is zero chance Marner would survive a season if the fans and media knew he declined a trade. He's so weak minded and needs constant pampering and reassurances. He would fold like a cheap lawn chair. Making dum dum statements like we're Gods here. get a grip ya putz. The guy says he wants to play here his career, well doesn't really matter anymore because even evoking your no trade only stops that for one year, then you're gone. The only thing he accomplishes is screwing over the team and his teammates because they get nothing in return for his asset. If I was his teammate I'd be ostracizing him in the room for being suck a turd.
Anyway, like I've said before, the only benefit of not moving him is that Tre and Shanny will be gone by the time the next President and GM get to spend the Marner and JT cap space and hopefully accomplish something tangible.
Also, I'm pretty sure Stephen Nixon just wrote an article today that summarized what I said on here a few weeks ago. "It Would Be Best for the Toronto Maple Leafs Long-Term Future to Miss Playoffs. "
3.) 09 Jul 2024 19:38:02
Marner is a weasel and needs to go
I sure hope they let Tavares and him walk after next year
Sign Draisaitl and Konecny.
4.) 09 Jul 2024 23:27:14
Rumour is, Treliving hasn’t even approached Marner with asking him to leave for another team. Tre sucks and no one wants to deal with him. Even his head scout went to go work for Dubas. Bad pick up for TO. Hasn’t done anything with creativity or made us go wow how did he do that. Everyone he has signed has been for either too much $ or too much term. Supposedly Reilly from Nsh was pushing hard to get Mitch but nothing came of that either. I feel that Brad is looking for the perfect deal and he “low balls” people and I’m sure with all those ego’s, they don’t like getting low balled.
5.) 10 Jul 2024 13:18:59
Ok so here’s my theory shanny pulls the strings so I honestly feel like marner was discussed but was never a real option either that or they’re looking for the sun and the moon in a return.
I also think management is scared, Chris Johnson said it almost feels like they are scared of the market and scared of losing a trade yet they will walk marner out the door July 1 they will get nothing for him and I think that in itself is a failure.
The leafs have a losing culture and the fact is unlike at the beginning of these players careers (the core) Toronto is once again becoming a market that no one wants to come to why.? Because the team revolves around four guys and everyone else is a side thought. The only thing the leafs have going for them is that players that need a prove it contract love coming to Toronto because of the market and the attention it gets then they walk for more money.
Our only hope for a winning team is to break up this core fire shanny and hope like he’ll berube comes as advertised and holds these guys accountable I mean not everyone loves him but nylander is the only one that ever catches heat from the coaches and I think it’s cause he can take it and use it as fuel that’s why I think he’s an ideal player for this market and he has shown it with his play and his off ice stuff.
6.) 10 Jul 2024 14:21:19
The REAL problem here is that we need new leadership, Shanny and Tre MUST go, and the moment that Tre feels his job is on the line he'll end up trading away Marner for trash or will use the walk-away cap space from MM and JT on dummies that really only further tighten the noose. So essentially unless those two are removed before those two dipsh*ts are relieved of their duties, they're ultimately still going to screw the team up beyond any serviceable timeslot for AM34 and Willy.
Leaf fans have 2 options. pray for a miracle that Pelley has seen enough and has learned enough to make a quick cut of these dead appendages. (Fan and media influence here is needed)
or.
Move on to another team, because there are 31 other teams that have a better chance of winning before the Leafs do.
well actually there's probably a 3rd option. keep lying to yourselves about how close they are and cry yourself to sleep after another round 1 exit. although with this lineup there's a 50% chance they don't even make the playoffs. Goes up to 90% if AM34 gets injured.
7.) 10 Jul 2024 15:18:41
@JDUB I can't recall anyone saying they're close except DM.
28 Jun 2024 13:51:41
My opinion on what the Leafs should be doing is to simply seek out a bucket of picks in return for Marner, maybe a very solid prospect, but not current roster players. The reality is that they would most likely lose out on any player swap that happens.
The "real" value with ditching Mitch is the CAP space. You could land 2 top defensemen with that space alone. Imagine being able to land 3 of Montour, Pesce, Tanev, Skjei, Roy, Zadorov. or even making a trade for Trouba. They would immediately be a significantly better team.
The picks would allow their scouting staff the opportunity to build, or it would allow you the opportunity to be able to add at the trade deadline based on need. They currently have no currency to do this now.
This significantly stronger defensive team would also provide you insulation to allow your young players to play out the entire season and develop themselves, free from more of those confidence destroying giveaways that TOR fans and media jump all over.
and finally you have a huge chunk of CAP relief coming next year from JT's contract. Now I would definitely try and bring him back at a greatly reduced AAV, but either way, you're getting a boatload of money to add again next year when the team is most likely more ready to actually compete for the cup given that you've allowed more ice time for your young guns to flourish.
IMO this needs to be a 2 year plan. Having a plan like this is something that would allows fans to be ok with another disappointing playoffs this year.
They probably won't play the longer (smarter) approach because they "feel" pressure to win it all this year. A task that is not realistic at all.
1.) 28 Jun 2024 15:56:23
I agree for the most part with this.
2.) 28 Jun 2024 18:17:24
I agree mostly.
It's definitely a 2 year play. If Mitchy doesn't want to come back at 9/ 8 years, or refuses a trade, just ride it out and keep the cap space.
24 Jun 2024 13:40:34
What really baffles me is reading the delusion of poster's on here thinking that Leafs management will do anything other than mess things up, again.
They will most likely overpay for the wrong player in free-agency.
If they trade, they will trade for someone that is a dud, all while giving up someone that flourishes once they are out of the curse that is the TML. Hyman, Kadri, Bozak, Kessel, Murphy, and on, and on...
They will probably not have the stones to trade Marner and will extend him with a no trade clause guaranteeing that we're stuck with him for another 8 years.
There is nothing in the entire history of this organization to think that there will be another outcome, and yet the fan base that considers themselves hockey "experts" will continue to fill SBA every night and waste countless hours on chats and social media after another failed season complaining...wake up and realize they don't care about your hockey experience, simply your hard earned money.
They should take the time and rename themselves the Toronto Stockholm Syndromes.
1.) 24 Jun 2024 14:30:11
So, you read all the posts on here, which you say are from delusional fans that spend too much time on social media talking about the Leafs which you admit to reading. Then write a post telling them that they do the above too much and calling them self-proclaimed "hockey experts" followed up with telling them what they should do in regards to their favourite team.
No hypocrisy there at all. lol.
2.) 24 Jun 2024 16:47:06
Yes I do. I'm also saying that they need to make their favorite team show them a proper commitment to winning it all before you believe any other outcome is going to happen. The only way that happens is to make them feel it in their pocket books. Stop buying merchandise, stop attending games and voice your 57 year old frustration at their ineptitude to put together a playoff winner. The way I see it is, they either don't really care about winning the cup because they make bank regardless or they simply don't have the leadership in place to make intelligent hockey decisions to accomplish that feat. There simply is no other excuse for the continual failures. I for one am tired of voicing any optimism in their direction, I need to see results first. Enough is enough. But sure, you can call me a hypocrite if you want. It means nothing to me, just like the "hopes" that they'll make the right moves this year. See you again next year when you're discussing your disappointment in the Leafs playoffs outcome.
3.) 24 Jun 2024 18:28:19
Jdub. Hypocrisy is basically taking a moral high ground over others on something that person does themselves. That is the basis of your post. You slam everyone else for being involved while here you are, involved in chat. I would also wager that most on this site are not regular attendees at Scotia Bank for games.
You claimed the "entire history of the franchise" suggests they will continue to lose, yet the Leafs own the second most Cups in history. Through the Ballard years, for sure, he didn't care. Entire history? Is not backed in fact.
There is nothing wrong with "hoping" when there is a change in management or coaching that the new group will hopefully get it done. imo
Seems pretty miserable living life without having hope.
I also don't see many saying on here that they are confident there will be success. Many say that they didn't like Dubas and Keefe and are more hopeful with Treliving and Berube. How is that "delusional"?
Let's look at some other franchises. Vancouver has never won a cup and been in existence as long as since the Leafs last won. Should their fans give up? stop going to games in order teach ownership a lesson? And when the NHL moves the team out of Vancouver for lack of support, then what.
Flyers going on 50 years. Buffalo 54 years and never won a cup. Canadiens 30 years since their last one. Calgary has one cup 36 years ago. Islanders 41 years. It took the Blues 52 years to win a Cup. Exactly how long before that did the fans stop showing up to make the organization start trying to win? 5 years prior? 10 years? 20 years? Teams that have won a cup didn't win because fans revolted against not winning it all by not showing up to games or buying merchandise.
Since the Ballard years, I find it hard to believe that people buy into the narrative that the Leafs don't want to win. I mean, I guess if you believe they wouldn't want all the extra revenue from Stanley Cup winning merchandise that will sell like crazy, then sure, I guess one could believe that management don't want to win. So, if we can only convince the players and management to want to win, a Cup would be in hand is the idea.
I wish it was that simple, but I'm pretty positive is isn't.
4.) 25 Jun 2024 13:06:53
HAHA, it's ok RLF, I didn't mean to burst your bubble. You're very active in the spread of hope on here, keep at it buddy. My point was simply they need to prove competent leadership and direction, they no longer get my blind faith.
Oh and maybe read a book on their "second most" Stanley cups. This was back when there was only 6 teams and they've never even won more than 2 rounds of playoff hockey. Impressive! 107 years of hockey and that's all you've accomplished.
Keep up the good work on here RLF. I'll listen when you add some FACTS and REALITY instead of hope and delusion to your posts.
5.) 25 Jun 2024 15:51:13
Jdub
The weakest argument is one that starts with insults and then based on insulting who you are debating.
I gave you facts. What wasn't? You gave one debatable point.
The 6 team league also had the Canadiens with first choice of all Quebec juniors. Don't think that helped them win all those Cups, including the ones in the 70's?
Since 67
Toronto 0 Cups. (13 prior to 67)
Canadiens 10 Cups (8 from 68-79 when they had many of the advantages spoke about) (14 prior to 67)
Detroit 4 Cups (only 7 prior to 67)
Chicago 3 Cups (only 3 prior to 67)
Boston 3 Cups (only 3 prior to 67)
New York Rangers 1 Cup (Only 3 prior to 67)
If it was so easy to win it in the 6 team league, how come no one but Toronto and Montreal have more than 7 in that era? Chicago, Boston and New York only won it 3 times each. That's half the teams with 9 total Cups. Rangers went 54 years without a Cup and 1 win in the past 84 years.
I just added more facts. Hope that helps.
6.) 25 Jun 2024 18:32:00
And yet franchises that have good leadership and are willing to make the emotionless and smart decision compete for the cup every year, and win it occasionally.
Hope is a rope for Leaf fans that blindly grasp at it.
You've convinced me though! I'm drinking your blue Coolaid RLF, if there's any left for the rest of us that is.
24 Jul 2024 16:56:39
50% of the names spelled correctly, wow.
08 Jul 2024 19:50:18
Why would even expect the Leafs to EVER win a cup? They are so poorly constructed they most likely will not even make the playoffs this year. Their supporting cast (above the core 5) is either not capable of being effective or too young still, and the top guys have zero clue how to push through and dominate when it counts. I mean Marner is the NHL's poster boy for weak and pathetic play come playoffs. They don't have a creative leadership team willing to make the hard (although not hard and really obvious at this point in time) decisions and moves. The could get extremely lucky and have other-wordly goaltending, although most likely not, that masks some of their holes, but it would never be enough to win the cup.
Do yourself a favor and stop expecting the Leafs to win. They can't even win a playoff round. They are the joke of the NHL, and while their will always be players willing to over look that point for a payday (case and point this July 1st) they will never attract any player that truly wants to win. Matthews will establish himself as the best Leaf ever by the time his contract is done and then he'll leave for a real opportunity to win. Hopefully they'll be able to trade him and recoup some assets (hahaha just like Marner), and maybe they won't have continued to waste draft capital.
Seek the only happy moments that you have coming your way. Tre and Shanny gone, Matthew Knies and Easton Cowan developing into top NHL talent, and the off glimmer of hope that the organization doesn't hire another dumb*** to replace Tre. That last one is a big hope!
06 Jun 2024 16:36:52
He can play his card of rejecting a trade but ultimately the Leafs control his 8th year, his playing time, and the way in which he is utilized. They can have a huge impact on his "career" contract. Include the fact that they could easily have it leaked that he refused the trade forcing him to deal with fan and press backlash. Oh and how do you think his teammates would react to the fact that he'd essentially be putting them in a worse position because the team would be without any asset in return. There's a zero chance he stays the entire year. His weak mental game would never be able to handle those things.
29 Jul 2024 13:50:00
Thanks Hurdemz. It kills me to say these truths. I love the Leafs, or at least the thought of what they COULD BE if they had proper leadership. I'm pretty sure if they ever won the cup the first 24 hrs would be me simply crying, followed by 7 days of me drunk as skunk.
29 Jul 2024 13:44:00
Once Treliving sorts out the contracts they'll sign Alex to an NHL contract. He is a low risk high reward signing. If you look back at his time since draft he's been on some rubbishty teams and in some very unfavorable playing situations. With the added motivation of playing with his brother, being put in a "better opportunity" could yield dividends for them.
Two items of concern for me are: 1) I would need to see him showcase would be his defensive play. It took Willy years to showcase that. Alex clearly has offensive skills. 2) Hopefully his playing time is because of a subsequent trade and not as a result of sending Cowan and Minten down. I think those two need playing time, and playing time together. They are the Leafs next wave.
25 Jul 2024 13:00:40
The Leafs could very well have a better team on paper this year and may have another decent regular season but unless they learn how to score playoff goals, meaning in tight and in the hard areas, they'll be out in round one again. On paper the Leafs have not only not added any of this type of player, they actually have subtracted one in Bertuzzi (not that I would have paid for him) . Can Chief change how the Leafs score over the course of the year? I'm not sure he can. He'll be tough on his asks but as mentioned above, the players rule that team, not management. With all the exponential pressure they'll be facing this year there is zero chance that room won't be divided, especially with the biggest baby of all in Marner there thinking he's a God. Add in the fact that new systems take time to adapt and don't always yield the desired results right away, it's going to be a sh! t show if they start off with a few L's, albeit probably exactly what the fans need in order to get meaningful change happening.
If history is the indicator, the Leafs will wait too long to make the required change and then when they finally do, it'll be the wrong decision. The koolaid drinking fans will then give them the excuse of "well their hands were tied".
How bad does this organization need to be to make me consider teaching my son to be a Habs fan?
24 Jul 2024 14:58:20
Hey 2.0, I'm not bitching or complaining at all, I'm simply stating facts. I agree that Shanny is the first domino that needs to fall, but Treliving has only demonstrated an ineptitude for leading and being a forward thinker on running an NHL team. At no point in his career has he done anything to show that he knows how to build a winner. I don't believe his hands are tied but rather that he doesn't know what to do with them other than keep one thumb up his keester. To be honest I hope he keep it there until such time as he gets relieved of his role. They still don't have a decent blueline. It's better than last year, but only if the old guys stay healthy, and that's a big IF.
The reality is that who even cares about the D? That hasn't been their issue these past few seasons, it's been that they can't score. OEL has 28 goals in the past 5 years and Tanev has 33 in a 15 year NHL career. Thank goodness we'll be able to score now. HAHAHAHAHA.
The player construction doesn't work. This has been thoroughly been proved out. The cap constraints with that same construction amplifies the fact that it won't work. I'm not sure how much more information they need to have in order to get that through their heads?
Who the F cares about "winning" a Marner trade? You get it done because you know the current setup doesn't work. What are they going to do? Re-sign the child to another huge deal with a NMC that F's the team another 8 years? Let him walk for nothing? Or do you get some assets back for him and spend the cap space? oh wait the time to do that has passed because they didn't act quickly.
You show these babies that you are in charge. You don't control how we run our business, we do.
Look at EDM just signing Bowman. There's a GM that'll bring a winner to that city again. Sorry Leaf fans, maybe in your kids kids lifetime.
24 Jul 2024 14:21:18
McCabe will be in the 4.5M to 5M AAV based on his current production. Who knows how high that goes if he has a solid year. They're looking at least a 2.5-3M increase on his cap hit. Knies will be getting at least 6M on a long term deal, there's another 5M increase. Woll's is going up 3M, so just with those 3 players the Leafs will see an increase in cap spending of $11M. There's JT's contract, oh and BTW you no longer have JT on your team so he needs to be back filled. That's the math, not hypothetical.
In terms of Trouba, his situation is completely different. He only has a 15 team not trade clause. He very well can be moved if Drury wants it to happen, case and point Goodrow. Drury took the emotion out of the equation and found a loophole to move his and get his cap space. Albeit they would not waiver Trouba as he's more valuable than that, but they very well could if Drury valued the cap space more than the assets. This is exactly the approach the pansy Leaf management should take. The Leafs management, while I've seen enough to conclude they don't have the skillset to be successful, are not in charge of the team, the players are. Catering to these Gen Z's sensitivities has been the downfall of a great opportunity. While I wasn't a superfan of everything Lou did, he always made it about the name on the front not the one on the back of the jersey. Chasing bloody records. throwing tantrums when they don't achieve milestones that they can use to milk the team for even more money. EAD you babies! Look at history of which teams win. It's the ones where management is the only voice that matters.
The Leafs have squandered the prime years of one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history! That's insane and disgusting.
