If leafs have to pay for contracts to be released of like Marleau and his extra year, that cost the leafs a first rounder.
Nylander for Karlsson should net a return of at least a first for the leafs and probably a second and a third, but also a propsect.
The remaining 4 years of this contract aren't going to be good. Yes this season might be the outlier but the remaining 3 years after that are going to be abysmal.
But even if Karlsson gets injured the leafs will have an amazing amount of ltir. Pull the same crap as Vegas and hide him till the playoffs each year.
Nylander and Brodie to SJ for Karlsson, 23 - 1st, 2nd and a 24 3rd.
Leafs cover the cost and sj pays with draft choices.

The first one is interesting as now Toffoli has asked for a trade apparently.
The second one I can't see Nash trading both Saros and Josi and retaining $4M. Saros is underpaid with two seasons on contract. Josi is still a top D at 33.

Keefe should have this season to prove his record isn't from the talent but that the talent rose from his abilities.
If he's as good a coach as his record seems to indicate, he should be able to adapt to a team that has a heavier game plan to it. Maybe these are the types of players he has been screaming for.
I am of the mind that the biggest mistake was letting dubas have any control (other than scouting, he is a good evaluator of talent), and letting Lou go. I believe that the leafs would have a stanley cup by now.

There is no possible definitive answer. Lou makes his mistakes as well.
That said, I think the culture that Lou creates would have been the biggest difference for the positive. Once Dubas took over, it became about the appropriately named core 4. He started it by saying "we can and we will. " Dubas created the divide between his stars and the rest.
Under Lou, it was more about the team. There were group rules and less individualism, which was positive for keeping the young stars humble. Dubas changed all that and created a top to bottom dressing room type of hierarchy.
I think the Leafs had a better chance to get a Cup by now if they kept Lou.

Willy Is out for willy only. He seems to love his life and doesn't give a crap what others think. As much as many here seem to believe, he isn't worth the effort.
Willy Is ubber talented (an argument could be made that he might be the most talented) but he has the heart of a nappalated nipple. Just hanging around and pretending he is making an effort.
As Matthews once mentioned, " when Willy is going he really goes". When Willie goes . this was his contract year, this will be a signing that will be regretted for years.
Trade both marner and Nylander.
The results will be worth it. Even if it is just choices and young talent. got to kill the cow to get the meat.
Getting into the playoffs and being clinched by March is nice but knowing the results w3ill be pretty much the same for the playoffs.
