What is the point of trading a 24 year old, RHD (Liljegren) with only 151 games of experience and is steadily improving, for a 34 year old, UFA, RHD (Tanev)

I love the targets, Hart, Frost & Walker but like trade 1, I don’t think that is nearly enough in return to satisfy the Flyers

Leafs are definitely not trading Hildeby who is their #1 goaltending prospect for a 2nd round pick.

@WB - If Leafs are able to get Tanev for Lily and a later draft pick, I hope they take it. Lilys only upside over some other guys is that he is young and shoots right. How much better is he really going to get? He will still be too small to clear a guy from the front of the net or win puck battles in the corners and he is not putting up points. So what is his ceiling? I’ll take 3-4 years of Tanev over Lily. I think Benoit, Lagesson and Gio (before injury) we’re all playing better than Lily. IMO.

Liljegren is only 24 and has shown improvement each year.
It is generally accepted that an NHL defenseman needs 250 - 300 games of NHL experience before his abilities can be correctly analyzed/ assessed.
Liljegren is only half way there so lots of room for improvement.
Tanev on the other hand is a 34 year old UFA with no guarantee that he will even resign with the Leafs.
Particularly with the way GM’s throw money around every June during Free Agent Feeding Frenzy.
Tanev will have his pick of cities he would like to finish his career in.
Trading a young 24 year old defender for a UFA defender who is a decade older seems like the kind of mistake the Leafs have been making for the past 6 decades.
Looking for short term gain while eventually experiencing long term pain!

Adding Dumba would have been a good idea before/ instead of signing Klingberg.
Still a good idea but I don’t think Abruzzese a 4th and a 6th is going to do it.
Probably more like Robertson and a 3rd and maybe even a touch more.
I like Lindholm a lot but he is Calgary’s #1 center and Nylander is a RW.
I think Lindholm and Nylander will end up signing for roughly the same amount of money ($9.5 - $9.75) so I think Calgary would opt to keep their #1 center.
I would not trade Liljegren for Hanifin (though Hanifin is the better defender) .
The problem is Hanifin is another LHD while Liljegren id Leafs only true RHD on the Leafs.
I do not consider Klingberg a true RHD because he appears to know little to nothing about defense.

Why would Calgary trade their 1st line center for a right wing?
Without Lindholm at center Willie would be forced to play with Backlund and his numbers would plummet.
Brodie and Lafferty for Pesce.
I think Carolina gives this a benevolent smile and carries uon with the serious work of building their team.
Brady Skjei is at best, a 3rd pairing defender.
He is completely unnecessary to Leafs defense.
Calgary trades their best RHD (Anderson) for a defenseman (Niemala) who is just beginning his AHL career and a 3rd pairing defender in Brady Skjei?
Also, Leafs don’t have a 2025 - 2nd round pick.
Robertson (an AHL player) and Duclair for Konecny?

Also, Muzzin doesn't count against the cap, and he's paid by insurance most likely. Not paid by the club.

Calgary is going to want a C in return, so if Toronto is getting Calgary's # 1 C it would have to be a 3 way deal or Toronto acquires a C & then uses in a PKG. for Lindholm. Or sweeten the pot on what you are offering, with which part of that PKG Calgary will uses to acquire a replacement C. Also a good target less of a PKG to acquire, similar to Lindholm with strong two way play would be Backlund. I keep the core 4 with Jarncrock being traded, & possibly a Brodie. Bertuzzi & Domi if healthy a good boost to the core 4.

Bertuzzi is a mixed bag can score & play make. With a Matthews & Marner maybe that works well adding some balance ( also grit & size ) to a line with a top 5 league wide goal scorer & line mate a top 5 playmaker. Yes only 2 years ago Matthews was the # 1 goal scorer, here is hoping he recaptures his form.
Domi more of a playmaker than goal scorer, but still a contribution in goals is expected. His playmaking skills helpful to two snipers Tavares & Nylander. Though Tavares excels as a play maker particularly below the dots in the offensive zone, he is a skilled sniper & more goals is always better.

Certainly can not see Calgary giving up their #1 center for an AHL player, a
‘B - B+’ prospect, and a late 1st round pick.
I like Konecny but adding only a 4th to acquire Nylander appears a little light.
Maybe a 2nd round pick?
The other part of this equation is that Nylander is about as far away from Tortorella’s preferred type/ style of player as you can get in the NHL.
I just don’t see Dumba as being worth $4.7 x 2.
He definitely isn’t a top pairing defenseman, nor is he as good s defender as Brodie.
Though Brodie on the 2nd pairing, covering Klingberg’s defensive miscues might help.
Comtois is a good reclamation project but if it forces Knies to the fourth line I think it is counterproductive.
Though a 4th line of Comtois - Kampf - Lafferty might work Comtois is not known for his defensive skills.

Non of Laf chytl or kakko belong on the top line so just get a couple of superstars instead of extra depth pieces because the top 6 need a lot of improvement.
