Trading a 6’5”, 212lbs, 3rd line winger for a 5’9”, 165lbs, 3rd line, winger never did make any sense.

This would give the Leafs a dynamic first passer (53pts on a down year) and PP specialist and a defensively sound RW for Matthews! Wonder if Dubie is high enough to bite!

That’s $8 million for Karlsson and $5 million for Rakell coming in with only $7.5 for Reilly going out.
Since Reilly has a NTC, Domi, Kampf, Jarnkrok and Reaves’s would all have to be going to the Pens in the deal.
It might be worth considering if Dubas was foolish enough.

Use Sandin, Muzzin, Dermott for powerplay
Leafs trade Kerfoot, Dermott and a 2nd to Minny for Jonas Brodin
or
Kapanen, Liljegren, and a 3rd for Dumba
Much rather package Kerfoot than Kapanen in any trade but Dumba will require a boat load! AND hate to give up Dermott but won’t be able to afford him next year! RFA and will get 2M plus!

If Holl got $3M, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dermott sees something similar. It is Dubas after all.
Brodin is just another Muzzin. Seems kind of redundant having them both on the team. And where would he play after Reilly comes back?
No matter how I look at it, if Leafs are trading for a top 4 defenseman, it has to be a RHD. Unless whoever we bring in has actually been playing right, despite being a natural leftie, we simply don’t have anywhere to put them. As it is, if we re- sign Muzzin, we are basically going to need either Sandin or Dermott to be able to make the switch to right, and that’s a bit of a long shot. Even Muzzin couldn’t make that switch. Which means, as much as I like Dermott, I have to agree with you, he will likely be traded.
Brodin is s great player. I don’t know if Leafs should give up so much for him though. Seems like a lot for a guy that really isn’t that much better than Dermott, but costs a lot more. You complain Dermot gets $2M next year, but Brodin makes $4M. That’s a lot for a guy who might be our bottom pair LHD.

Because he has whined his whole time in Toronto acting like he deserves a spot on the team even as a 20 year old. He asked for a trade because he didn't think he was getting a fair chance here. I have never heard him talk about how he needs to be better, just how frustrated he is.
Seems selfish to me when a guy puts himself above the team.

Wondering if lots of people on here really know hockey!? Matthias Eckholm is a stud top 4 D on any team! Maybe better than TJ Brodie, so he could even end up on first pair! So...how does anyone wonder where he would slot in with the Leafs, or if the Leafs would protect him in the expansion draft! Has another year left on a wonderful contract! No brainer, trade for him now!

I'm wondering if you do. Let me list some reasons.
1. Who do your protect? Muzzin, Ekholm, Reilly, Brodie. Which one is a freebie? If those are the options your paying at least 2 firsts to take someone else.
2. Where do you fit his salary?
3. What does it cost to get him?
Yes in a perfect world my top line is Mathews-Mcdavid-Kane
But fantasy land is fantasy land. Most trades involving Ekholm either underpay severely for what he is or don't account for the other issues. If you want to propose one then be my guest. Maybe it's perfect. Who know?

I Always love when someone pops in claiming to be the know it all about hockey. If the "people" on here didn't realize Ekholm was a really good defenceman, they wouldn't be suggesting trades for him. It is not just, where does he slot in or if you protect him, it is are you also willing to lose one of our other top 4 in the draft on top of what it took to acquire Ekholm. Our top 4 is not our biggest issue at the moment. It is the best top 4 we have had in years. Ekholm does not solve our problems upfront and if we use our assets to get him, we have nothing left to solve our issues upfront.

Sorry but I don’t see an improvement for 3C! Roy is MUCH better than McLeod, both defensively and especially offensively! Ntm, getting rid of McMann a 20 goal scorer for nothing!? Why are you revamping a 3rd line that just got revamped!? Like Rakell lots though!
