You can sign Marner for 3 years for $9.5 MM.

Next year Barrie and Muzzin can be re signed with Ceci being unloaded.

Under the suggestion of the trade above the Leafs have $3.4 MM open space for reaching the 2019/20 cap.

Combining this with Ceci leaving $7.9 MM will be available for next year. $5 MM increase would go to Barrie and $1.5 MM would go to Muzzin. Barrie $7.75 MM and Muzzin at $6.5 MM.

Leafs Center and RW would be incredibly strong. Leafs could actually re-sign marleau to play 3rd line LW if he was bought out by Carolina.

Correction, talent is not the same. Matthews is arguably a top 5 talent in the league. Yes Cotourier and Vorachek are good players, but definitely no reason do make this trade.

This is horrible. Leafs get worse in the short term and in the long term. Barry wants 8m and probably will not take less. Muzzin seems about right at 6-7m but Marner clearly will only accept 10m on a bridge. Also, Marleau asked for a trade because he doesn't want to be here why would he come back after just paying a first to unload him?

I know I touched on it before, but I forget what your response was. So, just felt it worth mentioning again. Right now we have Rielly and Dermott we protect. Harpur meets the requirements for exposure for expansion draft. So we can protect one other defenseman. If we sign Gostisbehere, Barrie, and Muzzin, then we can't protect them all, and will lose one of them in the draft. Not an optimal situation at all.

I have to agree with the other responses here as well HeatDreamer. We take a big drop in talent here. The only upgrade is Gostisbehere over Dermott. And even that is a bit of a gamble because the Ghost is so unpredictable. We all know he’s a great defenseman. But which player do we get? The Gostisbehere two years ago with 65 points, or the Gostisbehere of last year and three years ago, which still ain’t bad, but a huge difference between his one great season.

Should Matthews be injured for 30 games, this trade would not be the worst trade.

I prefer to keep Matthews, but, my concern is that he is injury prone.

1. Matthews is the best player
2. Couterier is the second best player
3. Voraccek is the third best player
4. Nylander is potentially the fourth best player
5. Ghostisbehere is better than Dermott presently.

Aaahh. Ok. I see where the difference lies now. You value Voracek higher than Nylander, while the rest of us probably aren’t seeing it the same way. Or at least I’m not. Especially with that $8M+ cap hit of his. I would much rather have the younger and cheaper Nylander. The other bone of contention, for me anyway, is that Couturier only has three years left on his deal.

Tell you what. I’m going to make a suggestion. I know you won’t mind because you make amendments yourself all the time. What I suggest here is to remove Nylander and Voracek, and throw in either Laughton or Lindblom. Leafs can add a pick.

Couturier + Gostisbehere + Laughton

I think that would work a little better from a Leafs stand point.

You make a very good point about Matthews though. And I would actually rather have a healthy Couturier over an possibly injury prone Matthews too at times.

Quick question. what if any of the 3 guys the flyers sent toronto get injured. The 2 forwards are older and have both had injury problems in the past.

Ghost is an upgrade from Dermott but if everyone stays healthy how much of a downgrade are the orher 2 and especially lng term.

I won't say this is the worse trade ever but i gotts say its definetly the old community college try.

I pass on this deal. now if youd add in frost, strome and myers i'd start to consider having this conversation again.

Trading away a top 5 talent because he missed 30 games over 3 seasons for less talent isn't a good move though. Injury prone thrown around a lot about Mathews but who knows.

I also hate trading Dermott for Ghost. Dermott has a lot upside at the moment.
