Marner to the Minnisota Wild for Parise ( Yes not a great contract at 7.5 million for another 6 years including 2019 / 2020.) Hartman ( 1.9 million signed for this year and next season ) Kaprizov, Kunin and Filip Johansson.

Tavares Parise Kapanen
Matthews Nylander Hyman
Kerfoot Hartman Johnsson
Kunin Mikheyev Spezza

Kaprizov ( Is compared to Kunetsov ) and Aberg would also be nice additions to the roster, of course the Leafs have many options to fill the bottom 6 positions.

I don't think the leafs can take on that many players. Not certain of the number but they have to be close to 40 contracts after Dubas sign-athon. I wouldn't take this deal either way though. Parise will look like a pile of crap by the halfway point and it will cost a lot to move him.

Yes Leafs would have to address # of contracts, Parise is not a great contract long term. Short term a few seasons and playing with Tavares, and PP time with Tavares, Matthews, Nylander and Reilly he will produce well. Last year Parise had 61 Pts in 74 G with 28 goals,10 of which on the PP. To get the package desired the combination of Marner and that perceived bad contract, gets you the package desired Parise still can be an asset to any team and the PP. Hartman is decent may have upside, Kunin is golden as is Kaprizov and Johansson. Great prospects are worth the wait, particularly Kaprizov.

I meant 50.

I like the trade partner you chose here. Minnesota has the cap capibilities to take on marners demand once they unload a guy worth 3 million or more to a deal with them.

Im not 100% sure parise is the right target to be that contract. He is a good player who in 3 years will have an awful contract but that's not my worry. My worry is he has a nmc so unless he actually agrees to come no point countng on that

Again good team to target.

Yes I get therer is a max. of 50 contracts, would have to be addressed.

Oh no. Not Parise. This guy is a disaster waiting to happen. He’s got a terrible contract as already stated a few times. I just feel the need to point it out again. The reason I want to do so is because of my next point: if Parise retires early, it would seriously negatively impact the Leafs cap going forward. The reason is because Parise now has one of those super long term, now illegal contracts. When they re-wrote the rule book, they decided to “punish” the Texans that had participated in these deals. The result is a penalty by way of cap hit determined by some formula I can’t possiblt remember. It’s the same thing that is happening to Vancouver and Florida now because Luongo retired early. So Florida has $1.5M Recapture Penalty over the next 4 years, and Vancouver would have something along those lines as well.

I think you picked a good team to be making changes still. Especially since Wild just fired their coach. But I’m not convinced this is the best trade for the Leafs. Even if Wild ate half his salary, I really think Leafs should avoid Parise unless the add-ins are so overwhelming in our favor we can’t say no.

12 Aug 2019 04:03:35
Very well put LeafsGm. Although I thought the recapture was put onto the team that originally signed the player. As far as I read the Canucks are now on the hook for 3m/ yr for a few years and Florida is off to the races oweing nothing as they traded for him afterwards.

If you are correct then this would be terrible for the Leafs as you stated. If not though, Parise retirement would only affect the team that signed him to that super long term deal wouldn't it? Maybe I understood wrong though lol a lot of this new CBA BS is just so convoluted it's ridiculous.

12 Aug 2019 15:35:44
No. It affects both the team that signed him and the team that possessed him at retirement. If you go on capfriendly and scroll to the bottom of both Vancouver and Florida, you will see the recapture penalty there. I don’t know if it affects any of the teams that possessed a player in between the original signing team and the final team at retirement, but I don’t think so. Just the original team and the last team.

12 Aug 2019 16:11:23
I thought I misunderstood lol just looked that up. Vancouver got burned with 3m and Florida 1m so it wouldn't be as bad for the leafs in that kind of situation. Plus if they had Parise could always try and convince him to just ltir for the last few years.
