Tor-T. Seguin

Dal- Marner, Kapanen

This way toronto has a C/ RW locked up for the next 8 for a couple million cheaper then what there going to get Marner for and adding Kapanen will free up cap space to work out the defence situation.

Agree0 Disagree1

I know I like this proposal. We lose two forwards while only bringing one back. That makes it easy to decide which seven to protect. And there looks to be about $5M in cap savings. That would go a long way in getting help for the defense. Heck, we might even re-sign Gardiner. So when you add in the extras player we can get from the cost savings, the deal isn’t a 2:1, it’s more like 2:1+, where the + is whatever Dubas can do with the extra cash.

I guess I should have mentioned that Dallas probably doesn’t trade Seguin without having a center come back. So I’m thinking Matthews might be the better trade suggestion here.

I love Seguin but I think Dallas does as well. Both sides get great players. Problem is dallas loses a center and doesn't gain one back.

I would say could replace Kapanen with Kerfoot but I like Kerfoot, I think he’s in a great position to be successful. Scoring 40 plus points in his first 2 seasons in the league.
How about

TOR- T. Seguin, J. Klingberg, C. Perry

DAL- M. Marner, W. Nylander, C. Ceci.

I like this deal better. Nylander can play C and dallas gets a playmaker for Benn. Leafs get better D back and Perry is OK but the cap needs to be counted for and he accounts for the differance. Love me some Tattoo crazy Seguin.

Love Seguin, but Leafs don't trade for a centre they don't need. It is important to recognise how you limit a player's effectiveness by casting him in the wrong role. Think Phaneuf as a number one defenceman which totally made him ineffective in everyone's eyes. Think Kadri being a third line centre last year with resulting poor production. Leafs as a team can use upgrades in RHD and backup goaltender. If Marner problems continue, maybe RW too.

We might not need a center, but we could sure use RHD, and klingberg is top of the league in that position. If Dallas would make this trade, Leafs had better take it. A slight downgrade at center for major upgrade on defense is a huge yes. Seguin is signed long term for under $10M. That alone makes him more attractive than Matthews no some ways some ways.

One thing though, even though he plays centre he can easily move to wing. Centres can 99% of the time succeed as a wing just not vice versa.

I don't think Phaneuf only issue was being a top D on the leafs. Game kind of evolved around him in a way that didn't suit him.

Kadri had inflated numbers by playing higher in the lineup than he probably should have been at times and made dumbass decisions.

I think that dallas may not see that as even. If Marner+Kapanen=Suguin there is no way Nylander =Klingberg.

@LeafsFan

I’m glad Dubas held out for Kerfoot and didn’t take the riskier, but much higher potential, Jost. Kerfoot is a true 3C. He was probably drafted with that position in mind for him. And he does a great job at it too. He almost had as many points last year as Arizona’s highest scorer. He’s a perfect 3C for us, and is capable of filling in the a higher level of someone gets hurt. He’s a lot better for 3C than Kadri, who is really a 2C, and will be used like one in Colorado.

@LeafsGm I agree all the way more just stating that Kadri 30 goal seasons probably won't happen again and Phaneuf had more issues than being on the top pairing. Was directed at Jimmy though.
